It's about the time he did it - Ichiro, that is. Japan's proud baseball legend slammed a doubles into the right field, his 4257th hit, in the game against the Padres June 15 night beating Pete Rose by one. Ichiro's feat was good enough to mark a Guinness world record in the all-time career hit in baseball.
Now, this is not his first Guinness - not at all. He has earned so far 7, starting with the most hit by rookie in a season with 242, the most in a major season with 262 in 2004, consecutive bases stolen in a season with 39, then the first Major League running home run in a year in 2007, then a 10 consecutive hitting streak of 200 hits in 2001-2010.
The previous night, June 23, Ichiro stretched his hitting string to 4261 - 1278 in Japan's professional baseball and 2978 in the Major League - 17 more to go to 3000.
In a TV interview a few nights ago, Ichiro said "he thinks he has always tried to do things to be laughed at", adding:
"Whenever I felt determined to do things, people would always laugh at me. Laughed, because they thought I was bragging too much. I would then work hard to accomplish and say something else again to be laughed at once more... That's the way I used to do things hard way and laughable way."
At age 42, Ichiro Suzuki is still going strong. Asked what awaits him ahead, Ichiro posed a few seconds and said he would take things as they come. Age 42 is believed to be poor luck, but that doesn't seem to bother Ichiro a bit. The way he dashes to the first base on a bunt, he still is in his thirties'. He sure has a lot more years ahead. Good show Ichiro. (Nathan Shiga)
