"Charlotte" for a Monkey?

By September 5, 2015 at 2:52 pm

Now, you recall Princess Charlotte of Cambridge was born on May 2, this year and the world greeted Her Royal Highness. You remember also that charming American actress who played the role of Hassan's wife Eliie in NHK's popular morning TV drama "Hassan" - Charlotte Kate Fox, of course.

Charlotte is a rather popular name and there are just as many Charlottes as Toms and Jerrys.

That said, here's a serious argument going on whether a monkey can bear the name. The story takes to you a popular monkey land in Oita, Kyushu - Takasakiyama Natural Zoo. A female baby monkey was born on May 6 and named Charlotte. That how how the story began.
The zoo traditionally names new-born babies  after some popular figures and events that had made headlines in the particular year, and this year the tennis player Kei Nishigori, a character Russle made popular by the comedians "8.6 Sec. Bazookaa", Ichigo (strawberry)  corresponding the 1(ichi) 5(go) of the last two digits of the current year, et. were among the most popular options - but not after Her Royal Highness Charlotte was born on May 2.

From that day on, the number of votes polled for Charlotte kept rising - finally up to 59.

Well, that's how the new-born girl money was named and how the "serious argument" started.

The zoo suddenly became a target of heated criticisms from outside charging that it was embarrassing, if not disgrace, to name a monkey that way. Some expressed concern implying it might develop into a diplomatic issue. Others contested what would the Japanese Imperial household's reaction be, if a money were named after any of the family. A total of over 300 protests were received (as of May 7).
The zoo apologized for the disturbance and promised to reconsider the naming. No ill intended after all, there are some who beg not to change the name arguing "that would be contrary to the wishes of those who voted in favor of Charlotte.

The zoo is totally perplexed, so it is reported.
