The University of Tokyo is no longer the Asia's leading higher education institution after being overtaken by Peking University from China and the National University of Singapore in a global ranking list released on Wednesday.

The British education magazine named Time Higher Education has released a global ranking of all universities from all around the world. The world's top 800 universities were decided by this ranking list. This ranking has been decided by 13 factors such as the number of students per one teaching stuff and the number of foreign students. It is the 12th year since Time Higher Education has started the evaluation.  The coverage is also expanded and measures a range of factors, including teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

The California Institute of Technology remains as the world's No. 1 institution and the University of Oxford  from Great Britain in second place and Stanford University to placed third.

The University of Tokyo, commonly known as Todai, which has been on the top of the list in Asian institutions for 5 years, came to be placed at 43rd position. Todai were placed 23rd in the ranking last year and it is a huge step moving backwards. This allowed the National University of Singapore where ranked at 25th last year, to be placed top of Asian universities, being placed 26th. Peking University moved up in the ranking from 48th to 42nd.

The only other Japanese institution in the top 200 was Kyoto University, with 88th place, which fell from 59th place in 2014. Tokyo Institute of Technology, Osaka University and Tohoku University disappeared from the list on the top 200.

Asian universities have been improving a lot in the evaluation while Japanese universities have retreated. Both Singapore and China has 2 universities in the top 200. Korea has 4 universities with Seoul universities ranked 85th and 3 others following it.
