Sword Art Online Gets Anime Film Adaptation

A film adaptation of the anime "Sword Art Online" has been greenlit for production. The film will be a brand new animated project penned by the author of the original work, Reki Kawahara. It will be produced by A-1 Pictures, with Tomohiko Ito as the director and character designs by Shingo Adachi.

It was decided to produce the movie version of the animation "Sword Art Online". It is a brand new animation created by the original auther Reki Kawahara. The production will be conducted by A‐1 Pictures, directed by Tomohiko Ito. Characters will be designed by Shingo Adachi.
The original light novel series was a breakthrough hit, with 16.7 million copies printed worldwide. The story is a science fantasy depicting a battle of people who are trapped in a video game world by using virtual reality technique.

The first season of the TV animation began airing in July of 2012, and the bonus story "Sword Art Online Extra Edition" aired on New Year's Eve 2013. The second season, "Sword Art Online II," began airing in July of 2014.

The trailer for the film has also been released. Additionally, on January 27 next year, the "Sword Art Online Music Collection" will be available for purchase. This compilation contains a total of 131 tracks including music from the first and second seasons of the anime as well as from Extra Edition, and previously unreleased songs which have yet to be announced.
